THE ISLAND OF PAG
Pag is an island full of contrasts, and its diversity offers many possibilities. It is an island that spreads across two Counties, thus it has different dialects and customs. Nevertheless, it is a unique whole that will captivate you completely. It has rocky scenery, numerous bays, coves, beaches, and it is the longest among the islands on the Croatian side of the Adriatic.
STARA NOVALJA (OLD NOVALJA)
Stara Novalja is a peaceful tourist spot located in a bay of the same name. Protected from high winds, with Mediterranean vegetation and a high number of sunny days per year, it is an ideal spot for a peaceful family holiday. There are numerous beaches, the largest of which being the Trinćel beach. Apart from swimming and sunbathing, biking, jogging or scuba diving, you can enjoy a tasty fish meal in various restaurants; the hotel and restaurant “Boškinac” (only a few minutes away by car, or 15 minutes on foot). We highly recommend the art gallery “Skale do sunca”, located in a medieval castle, run by a group of creative artists that go by the name of “petikat”.
NOVALJA
Novalja is the tourist center of the Island of Pag. Numerous archaeological sites are a testimony of an interesting history. Here we especially emphasize the three Early Christian Basilicas, valuable items from the archaeological collection “Stomorica”, and the unique water supply system from the 1st century. You can also visit the City Museum of Novalja, that preserves the cultural and ethnological heritage. Novalja is surrounded by beautiful beaches, where you can enjoy the sun, the sea, and various recreational activities. The so-called “Novalja Cultural Summer” offers many interesting events – art exhibitions, concerts, performances of harmony-singing groups and folklore ensembles, outdoor cinema, show programs, etc.
THE CITY OF PAG
The City of Pag is proud of its centuries-old culture and tradition, very famous in Croatia and all over the world. It has a plethora of cultural and historical monuments and offers a wide range of cultural events, such as the Pag Summer Festival. Pag lace is one of the most famous Croatian souvenirs, and it is an autochthonous creation from Pag. It has been inscribed in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Pag Lace Museum offers some of the most beautiful exhibits of lacework.
CURIOSITIES
On “Velo Tusto Čelo” mountain peak, located just several kilometers outside of Novalja, there is a natural phenomenon known as the “Pag Triangle”, which has long been associated with UFO sightings in the area. Near the City of Pag, you can find natural curative mud. It is particularly popular with elderly people, as it helps with rheumatic diseases and has a soothing effect.
GASTRONOMY
In a recent survey published by the Guardian, Pag was declared as the island with the best gastronomic offer in Croatia. The Pag salt, medical herbs, the famous cheese and lamb from the Island of Pag, seafood, fish specialties, healthy fruits and vegetables, olive oil, wine, prosecco, home-made pastries – these are all a true delight for the visitors. The cheese from the Island of Pag is particularly famous for its quality. The specific and very recognizable aroma is present thanks to sheep that are raised on meadows full of fragrant plants.
OLIVE TREES OF LUN
Close to the sea and amidst crude stones, the nature has created a masterpiece – an olive tree. Olive trees of Lun are several thousand years old, and it is extremely hard to find such olive trees growing in their natural environment. Enjoy yourselves under the branches of this defiant botanical reserve.
RECREATION – ACTIVE VACATION
Novalja has several kilometers of cycling routes. Take one of these, pass by numerous vineyards, and experience a whole new meaning of the word ‘beautiful’. Hiking fans must visit the site Stogaj at Metajna. Professional divers should not miss the deep, mysterious underwater world, or the 1st-century amphorae that can be found in the Velebit Canal, 30 meters under the sea.
ZRĆE
This world-known clubbing “mecca” is located in the beautiful Zrće bay, surrounded by pine trees. In the nightime, Zrće beach becomes one of the biggest stages for the wildest parties on the Adriatic, where popular clubs, such as “Aquarius”, “Papaya” and “Kalypso”, attract thousands of young people from all over the world. Sports fans must try the ski-lift or bungee jumping to get a high dose of adrenaline.
TRANSPORTATION
Novalja’s excellent geographical location makes it possible to take daily excursions to other Croatian tourist destinations. The Islands of Rab and Lošinj, Kornati, Krka, Plitvice Lakes, Paklenica and Northern Velebit National Parks are all nearby. Zadar, a city of rich history and exceptional cultural heritage, is only an hour away. The north side of the island is connected to the mainland with Prizna-Žigljen ferry route, while the south side is connected with the Pag Bridge. To get to other Croatian cities and towns, you can take the bus; or the fast boat in order to get to the Island of Rab and the city of Rijeka. Zadar Airport is only 80 km away from Novalja.
